Why Dog Cages Are Vital For Traveling

By Layla Smith

Pet travel crates allow you to very easily and safely transport your beloved pet almost anywhere. You are going to have to pick the proper cage based on the pet that you are going to be traveling with. You are going to find that you have a lot to choose from. If designer cages are your cup of tea, you can pick one of those from the hundreds of assorted styles and designs available. You are going to need to look carefully when picking the 1 that is simply right for your needs.

Over sized crates will be necessary for transporting medium to large dogs. You could require assistance with the crate if you have a larger animal. The crate needs to be a size that allows your dog to sit down up, turn around, and stand easily. It also needs to be able to accommodate food and water containers.

If you are traveling with a small dog, you may be able to use either a travel bag that stays with you or a small crate. Many airlines permit this. The travel bag you pick may look like a handbag, a front sling, or even a backpack carrier; all of these styles and designs have places for the dog's head to come through.

Cats typically require pet travel cages in the form of a cat carrier. This is really the only safe and secure way to transport a cat. Unlike dogs, cats do not tend to stand while they travel, so the carrier doesn't need to be large enough for them to do so. There should be ample room for the cat to be comfortable in the carrier; however, it only has to have enough space for your cat to lie down without the top of the carrier touching his head.

Once you have made the decision as to which travel cage is best suited to the needs of you and your pet, you will be ready for your trip. With so a lot of options, there is no longer any reason for Fido or Fluffy to stay house while you take pleasure in traveling the world! With the protection and safety provided by your pet travel cage, you and your pet can now take pleasure in many brand new trips together.

Purchasing items for your pet, and caring for them are part of what makes pet ownership so rewarding. A travel carrier is necessary to properly secure your pet and keep the animal comfortable during travel. These cages will make either a two week vacation or a day shopping trip, more enjoyable for both of you. I mean they are an extension of the family - Are they not? Mine certainly believe that they are! - 29953

The not so lucky help is if he gets the plastic liner anyplace else as this leads in a trail of refuse from the kitchen through three rooms to the garage. No Idea How To House Break Your Puppy?

By Peter Albertony

It's a serious business having a puppy or a dog. Sure it's fun but expect there to be work involved as well. And one of the first jobs you'll need to tackle when you have a new puppy or dog in the house is to house break your puppy. It can be less than fun to house break puppies.

That's not to say it's necessarily all that hard, just that it can be if you don't know what you're doing.

And if you don't want a completely disrupted household then you need to get it right. For your sake, for your puppy's sake and for the sake of everyone else who lives in the house.

And of course not everyone starts with a puppy, there are some people who, through various circumstances, end up with a full grown dog that needs house training. Again it's not all that hard to potty train a full grown dog - provided you know what you're doing.

Now I'm not going to tell you all the steps to house breaking puppies here, I don't have the space or time, and I reserve that for my website. But I will offer a few tips here where I have space.

First, always remember that you're the boss dog. Your dog or puppy expects you to set the rules of the house and he is prepared to follow them if you teach them correctly. Teaching them correctly doesn't involve punishing him for any infraction of the rules.

But regardless of this you need to be quite consistent in setting the rules and explaining them to him and training him to respect them.

Instead of punishing your dog for a breach of the rules you need to use positive reinforcement. In the past it the accepted wisdom was to show him the rules, for example where his potty place was, then punish him for every breach till he got it right. This can take a long time and subject you both to a lot of stress.

And remember, every dog or puppy is different. For some it will take almost no time at all to potty train him. For others it will take much longer. Be prepared for this and accept that it will take as long as it takes, even if you are doing everything right.

It may take a while, it may not. Expect it to take while and be surprised if it doesn't.

House breaking a puppy is a process that both of you need to go through to the end. You need to learn exactly what to do, do it consistently for as long as it takes and you will succeed.

It's about you as much as it's about him. Know what you're doing and do it as long as you need to, consistently. Find out more advice about house breaking puppy at my website. - 29953

5 Smart And Easy Tips For Keeping Your Pooch Safe

By Eric Renfro

Your dog relies upon you to keep him safe both inside your home and outside. Most owners realize that they should keep their canines on a leash while they're outside in order to prevent their roaming into the street. But, their responsibility extends much further. In this article, we'll provide five tips that you can use to ensure the safety of your pooch.

#1 - Keep Dangerous Poisons Out Of Reach

Your canine's appetite isn't limited to the meals you provide him during the day. Given the opportunity, he'll eat items that are not meant to be consumed (at least, not by him). For example, he may begin eating antifreeze if it is left within his reach. He might also start eating mouse bait, pesticides, and your own medications. Each of these items can lead to significant health issues. Keep them out of his reach.

#2 - Tag Him

You may think it could never happen, but many owners have learned that their dogs are always willing to explore if they're given the chance. One of the reasons animal shelters in many cities are overflowing is because canines get loose and roam until they're found. Put a collar and tag on your pooch. Also, consider microchipping him. Then, once a week, check to make sure his collar and tags are secure.

#3 - Keep His Head In The Car

It is a rare dog that doesn't love to ride in a car with his head sticking out of the window. The problem is that it invites bugs and debris into his eyes. Plus, if you're involved in a traffic collision, your pooch can be injured. If he's going to ride in the car with you, keep the windows up enough to prevent him hanging his head outside.

#4 - Make Him Ride In The Cab

Owners will often place their dogs in the exposed bed of their trucks. This is incredibly dangerous for a few reasons. First, the stopping and starting can throw him off balance, often into the sides of the vehicle. Second, taking a sharp turn while your pooch is elevated on the side of the vehicle can throw him from the back into traffic. If you own a truck and you're bringing him along, keep him in the cab.

#5 - Have A Veterinarian On File

The worst time to look for a veterinarian is when your dog desperately needs one. You should have the name and contact information of a trusted vet within reach. That includes his or her office phone and an emergency number. You should also have a back-up veterinarian that you can take your canine to in the event your primary vet is unavailable.

Your dog's safety is at risk from accidents. Whether he's getting into rat poison, becomes lost, or is riding in the back of your truck, you don't expect him to get into trouble. It happens unexpectedly. Take the time to make sure he's as safe as possible. - 29953

Treating Heartworm Symptoms In Dogs

By Jennifer Richard

Many people believe that heartworms are an infestation that dogs can catch from other dogs or from eating things off the ground that have been infected. This is not the case. Heartworms are caused by mosquitoes who carry the larvae of heartworms and infect the dog when they bite it. When heartworm symptoms in dogs becomes noticable the dog usually has had the infestation for a long period of time.

There are many steps we take on a yearly basis to assure that our dogs remain healthy. Many people take their pets in for an annual check-up which includes getting any vaccinations that are due, having the teeth cleaned, and other tasks that a veterinarian must perform.

Adding treatment for heartworm should be included in this yearly check-up. The medicines available to prevent heartworm in a dog are affordable and come in topical creams, pills, or shots that are given yearly. Using these treatments assures that a pet will not be infected by a mosquito bite.

Heartworms are more prevalent in any area where there is standing water and mosquitoes live. While heartworm parasites cannot be transmitted from dog to dog they will generally both become infected because they are in the same location and being bit by mosquitoes.

An infestation is fully manifested by the type heartworm symptoms in dogs become visible. Heartworms can live in the bloodstream of a dog, attacking organs throughout the body, for several years with no visible symptoms. By the time the symptoms do begin to appear the dog is ill and needs to see a vet immediately.

When the heartworms begin to clog the heart of a dog it will often begin to have severe coughing spells. In most cases the coughing will lead to a gasping for air and the dog may lose consciousness.

With the infestation in the lungs the ability for a dog to produce oxygen that they need is greatly reduced. This causes many dogs to have shortness of breathe and sound very raspy when they breathe.

As the heartworms accumulate in the blood stream the flow of blood to the organs and the brain is severely decreased. This can cause a dog to be lethargic and unable to function or be active without falling down or coughing. By this time a pet will also be unable to walk any distance, will not be able to run, and will need to be lifted or carried up stairs.

Heartworm symptoms in dogs that has become visible and noticeable to the owner is an indication that they have a severe infestation. Along with the heartworm infestation most pets also have other infections that result from the inability of their bodies to fight off infection. The treatment for these symptoms involves several trips to the vet for medication and treatment. Following treatment a dog must be kept quiet for several months and checked regularly until the infestation has been destroyed and they can return to health. - 29953

How to Know if a Horse is Healthy

By Doug Stewart

When deciding on a new horse, a key factor is its health. Although one cannot be 100% certain that a horse is absolutely healthy, there are some basic checks.

One begins with the general external appearance. The coat should be even, shinny and lie flat. The body should be well filled out, with well toned muscle. It should not be overweight or underweight. It should stand evenly on all four legs, with all four hooves pointing straight ahead. It is normal to rest a hind leg (but not a front leg), provided that it is not always the same leg which is rested.

Run your hands slowly down each leg, feeling for any swellings, bumps or hot spots. Give special attention to joints and the bottom of the leg. Check that each hoof is smooth, even and crack free.

Lift a hoof and check the sole for correct shape and any indications of previous injury; then repeat with the other three hooves. The angle and tilt of all four hooves should be correct and identical. If the horse is reluctant to lift a foot, it could just be lack of training, but may well be that it does not want to put more weight on another hoof, which would indicate an injury (to hoof, leg or spine). If you are unsure on any of these points, ask a professional farrier or blacksmith to perform the examination.

Check the gums. They should be pink, shiny and moist. If they are dry, tacky, pale or any color other than salmon pink, there is a health issue. If one presses gently on the gums (careful with your fingers!), at the point where you are pressing they will turn white but as soon as you remove your finger the color should completely return to pink within two seconds.

Check the teeth (you may want to use the services of a horse dentist) for spurs, unevenness or excessive wear. Try feeding the horse hay and watch how it eats. It should use both sides of its jaw equally and eat steadily. Dropping hay or leaving hay partly chewed indicates a problem either with the teeth or the jaw joints.

Examine the horse's droppings. They should be firm, with a mild and inoffensive odor.

The horse should appear alert, interested in things around it, and happy. It should move its ears in response to noises and hold them in an upright position.

Have someone ride the horse in an exercise ring while you watch. They should gradually take it through a walk, trot and gallop; going first in one direction and then in the other. At all times the horse should display an easy, smooth movement with strides of consistent length, carrying its weight evenly on all four legs.

It should not start to sweat (unless the weather is hot) until it has been worked for some time as a fast gait. Likewise, its respiration should not be fast unless worked hard, although a gradual increase in respiration as the gait speeds up is normal. After working the horse fast for a while, gradually slow down, spending some time in each gait. As the gait reduces, the respiration should quickly reduce as well. Once the horse stops exercising, its respiration and pulse should rapidly return to normal. Any sign of pain, limping or discomfort during or after exercise should be carefully investigated. Failure to meet any of these criteria may indicate a health issue. Alternatively, they may simply mean that the horse has not received regular conditioning exercise.

Discuss the horse's medical history with the owner and seller. Ask to see its inoculation book and medical records. Check if you can discuss these with the horse's regular veterinarian. In particular, check if the horse has ever had any illness, especially colic or laminitis. Any incomplete or evasive answers should be a concern. Ask what the horse's diet is, since horses fed a natural diet (grass, supplemented by hay) are less likely to develop digestive problems than horses fed mainly on grains or feeds. Finally, check if the seller will provide a written guarantee for any existing health issues which you discover following the purchase. - 29953

What To Look For In An Animal Hospital: London ON

By Trevor Weir

Responsible pet ownership means ensuring that your animal has routine veterinary care. If you are trying to choose an animal hospital London On, you may be unsure what to look for in order to choose a vet for your new family member. There are a few different things that you should look into in order to find the one that is right for you.

Many people call the different animal hospitals in order to find the best prices. You can also get information on the different animal hospitals using the Internet. You want to check on a few different things such as price and range of services that are available. Keep in mind that the prices you want to look for are the ones that you will be charged on a more regular basis. You want to look at how much it will cost you for routine office visits such as annual physical exams and vaccinations. Another thing that you should look at is how much dispensing fees are for prescriptions. This is because you will often be paying these when you get medications for your cat or dog.

When you are looking into a veterinary clinic, you may see the terms "small animal" or "large animal". A small animal clinic looks after domesticated pets such as cats and dogs. A large animal clinic will generally tend to domestic livestock. A veterinarian may not be interested in treating an animal outside their area of experience.

Cats and dogs can be treated at most small animal clinics but if you have rodents, birds or lizards you will need to make sure that the clinic you are interested in will treat exotic animals. Did you know that surgery can be performed on most animals, even fish? However, different animals have different metabolic rates and their medical needs may vary. If your pet is being treated by a vet that is not aware of their needs, they can make the situation worse.

Many surgical and diagnostic techniques require specialized equipment. You should try and find out what an animal hospital is equipped to treat. You should also ask how the clinic will handle referrals and where they will send those referrals to. If you are not comfortable with that choice, you should either select a different primary care clinic, or find out if you can change where the referral will be handled.

What office hours does the animal hospital have? Do they have evening or weekend hours for people who work full time? Also, you need to make sure that there is an on call procedure. You want to make sure that you will know who to call or where to go if and when your pet becomes ill.

Having an on call service is very important since it is rare that a pet gets sick or injured during normal office hours. You should also find out whether the clinic has modified office hours on statutory holidays. Don't be surprised if they are closed over the Christmas holiday, many are. They may also have reduced office hours on holidays or weekends.

Testing is often required for many medical conditions. Since time is of the essence for many tests, you want to make sure that testing can be done right at the clinic itself. Tests that are being sent out to a separate testing facility may take days or weeks to return the results. Most clinics will have the ability to perform some routine tests, but you want to make sure you are fully covered at your clinic.

A responsible pet owner makes arrangements for regular and timely medical care. Doing a bit of legwork before you need a vet can make it a lot easier on your mind and your wallet. - 29953

Training Tips For Pet Dog Owners

By Richard Nixon

The dog should be trained to eat at every place. He should be told how to eat indoors or outdoors. This is necessary in case you need to take the dog to any event or show.

An important part of dog training is to train him to use the crate. Then you can carry the crate anywhere. The puppy should be trained to sit in the crate. As far as potty training is concerned, you should buy a flexi leash and train the dog to go potty there.

You should also train him not to make a lot of noise in the vehicle. He should sit there calmly. You can consider rewarding him for the quietness so that he will have an incentive to be quiet in future and will not make noise again.

The dog training sessions are useful in getting your dog to respect you and accept your orders. You can control him and not worry about your dog getting out of your control for any reason

How To Curb Your Dog's Biting Tendency

By Eric Renfro

Millions of people are bitten by dogs each year; young children are usually the victim. Not only does this result in a possible health risk for the person who has been bitten, but in the case of kids, it can leave a damaging impression of canines. That is unfortunate. The bond shared between humans and dogs is incredibly strong. Being bitten at a young age can lead to an emotional scar that destroys any chance of enjoying that connection.

The good news is that a canine's biting tendency can be eliminated. Below, I'll explain a strategy that relies heavily upon startling a dog when he bites. I'll also describe the steps you need to take in the event your pooch sinks his teeth into someone.

Curbing The Tendency Through Startle Response

Dogs learn to bite as puppies. If you were to observe them playing with their littermates, you would notice them biting each other while playing. It is natural to them because their mouth is the primary tool they use to hunt. Unfortunately, if your canine's natural tendency to bite is not curbed, it will continue to grow and become a problem for you, your family, and guests.

Many trainers and veterinarians suggest using a "startle response" strategy to teach your pooch not to bite. When he does, make a sharp noise at a high pitch that startles him. If, as a puppy, he were to hurt one of his littermates by biting too hard, this is the noise they would make. When he hears it, he'll know instinctively that he has done something wrong. In some cases, you'll notice that he'll look confused. Take that opportunity to substitute a chew rope or another toy that he can bite. That teaches him that biting is acceptable as long as he doesn't do it to people.

You should also socialize your puppy as soon as possible so he'll learn at an early age what kind of behavior is appropriate around people. Spaying or neutering your dog can also reduce the likelihood of biting.

What To Do If Someone Is Bitten

If your canine bites someone, control him immediately. Then, ask the person who has been bitten whether he or she needs medical attention. Give that person all of your contact information as well as that of your veterinarian. Also, provide your pooch's last vaccination date.

If animal control workers arrive, answer their questions openly; they'll likely want as much information about your canine and the events surrounding the bite as possible. Finally, ask your vet to recommend a professional trainer to help curb the behavior as quickly as possible.

Your dog's biting tendency can be eliminated easily if you devote time toward it when he is still a puppy. Even as an adult dog, the tendency can be suppressed by enrolling him into professional obedience classes. The investment helps ensure the safety of your family and guests. - 29953

Most automatic pet dogs are bought for dogs, since they tend to be the most popular of pets. Dogs need to go in and out of a house constantly due to their nature. It's quite common to see a house with an automatic dog door installed in areas where there is not much crime.

Most people that get an automatic pet door get it for their dogs. Dogs tend to need to go outside to relieve themselves and go inside to eat or enjoy the company of their masters. It is not unusual at all to see an automatic dog door in houses in neighborhoods where crime is low.

Also, if you have a cat and you let it go and come as it pleases, you can also make it wear a collar to open the door. This works perfectly on cats that spends most of the time outside the house but come back to eat anyway.

Guard dogs can also make use of this if a burglar has gotten past them and had gotten into the home, the guard dogs could use the automatic pet door to get back in the house to try to deter them from stealing anything or harming the family.

Installing a automatic dog door is very easy; all you need to do is mount it or get it mounted on a door that faces the outside. Usually it means the back door, but a patio door or a garage door can be selected. It's always a good idea to compare prices in stores and online before getting your automatic pet door, as you will be able to get a better deal that way. - 29953

Horse Agistment - How To Choose The Right Property

By Michelle Rudge

The phrase horse agistment comes from English law where, to agist, meant to take cattle to graze, for a remuneration. Back when agistment first came into practice it referred to the proceeds of pasturage in the king's forests. But for us, horse agistment basically means when a horse owner keeps their horse on land owned by someone else, for a fee. However, the terms, facilities and services of horse agistments vary widely.

The services offered by the different horse agistment operators can vary greatly, and offer plenty of benefits to both the horse and owner. These can range from things like spelling agistment, small group agistment and riding agistment all the way to things like full care agistment. Before you decide on where best to place your horse, there are some points to take into consideration. For example: paddock size, quality of pastures, seasonal range of grasses so that your horse has feed no matter what time of year (this will save you a lot in extra feed expenses). Is the fencing going to do it's job and not fall apart? Will it withstand the elements and keep your horse in its allotted field? Also, don't forget about sheltering, natural wind breaks and then things like shade and stables.

Quite a few horse agistment land owners will request that your horse be kept worm free prior to and during its stay so you need to also look into having that done on a regular basis. The land owners themselves will often carry this out for you as part of the contract. Likewise for things such as the horses dentistry and the like. So when it comes to horse agistment, factoring in all these things can take a huge burden off the horse owner, and if your lucky enough to find one, some horse agistment operators even offer some fun services to get the most of out of owning a horse. These include things like riding days where you can take your horse out for a ride with others.

It is ideal for you to visit the property first and inspect the facilities. It is also beneficial to know if there are experienced staff on site who can offer help and advice where needed. Do they have a passion for horses like you do and can you be confident that they will offer your horse the best care while you are not there. Many great properties adjoin forests or national parks where you can enjoy many riding trails, these are popular choices for horse owners.

So in conclusion, if you are looking into horse agistment, it does not matter which "side of the fence" you are on, there are plenty of things to discuss when it comes to drawing up the contracts. Unfortunately, these days, contracts are an essential for these kinds of things so make sure both parties are agreed on the responsibilities of each and that all costs, fees and pricing structures are double checked before signing. Not to mention things like contingency plans for natural disasters, like flooding and forest fires, all the way to things like procedures for unexpected illness, diseases and injuries of the animals in question. - 29953

Natural Cat Food: Why You Should Be Using Natural Cat Food

By Christine Pinkston

The first reason you should use natural cat food is because the food you buy at the store is generally lacking nutrition wise. When your cat gets the nutrition his body needs his life span doubles.

So, essentially your cat is starving even though they eat food every day. Using natural cat food lets your cat get the nutrition he needs to stay strong, active, and healthy.

The best way to prevent vet bills is to make sure your cat gets the proper nutrition. A well fed cat gets fewer preventable illnesses then cats suffering from malnutrition. That means you get to spend way less on vet bills!

When you feed your cat natural cat food he won't have many of the problems other cats have because he will be healthy with a good immune system.

Another thing along the lines of saving money while giving your cat the proper nutrition is that when a cat get the proper nutrition he will stop eating sooner. Cats do not comfort eat like humans. After your cat is used to receiving the proper nutrition you will only need to feed him once a day.

The third reason to use natural cat food is because you know what is in it. When you make your cat natural food you know what your cat is getting. One thing to know is that cats need a lot of taurine. Without taurine cats systems can not function properly. Raw meat is a good source of taurine.

Some of the commercial pet food companies get their meat from dead, dying, or diseased animals. Examples are road kill, dogs and cats that are put down at the pound (the poison does not cook out so it is present in your cat's food), and diseased cows. So not only does your cat get no nutrition from most commercial food but it also causes them harm. Take note that while some do use these for meat sources, not all do.

The safest way to feed your cat is to use natural cat food. - 29953

Purchasing The Appropriate Dog Supplies

By Sophie Allen

Pay equal attention to the food of your dog as you would do for your baby. Below are some tips that can help you in buying proper accessories for your dog.

Food

You should consider your dog's need while selecting food for him. It must be ensured that the food you select has a proper balance of vitamins and minerals. If you have sporting dog then he should be provided with food that can maintain his hyperactive lifestyle. Whereas, the older dogs need low calorie food to avoid weight gain. Don't compromise the quality of the food for money. Your dog's health will be depicted by the food he will eat.

Leashes and Collars

When selecting your Dog's leashes and collars, it is important to consider the weight of your dog. Even the collar material should also be given importance. For dogs who love water, it is preferable to buy collar made of Nylon since this material is light in weight and more lasting. Generally, leather collars are considered better since these can be worn with spikes and are more durable.

Select a toy which should be of a larger size so that it can't be swallowed by your dog. Whereas, it should not be that large that your dog can't even grip it..

For a serious chewer dog, the toy should be durable. Whereas, you can always buy dog toys made of vinyl and latex for the not so serious chewer.

Are You Aware Of How To House Train A Puppy?

By Alex Pendry

Don't you wish that when you brought your new puppy home they knew how to do "their job" without you having to teach them? Well unfortunately it is up to you as the owner to learn how to house train a puppy as soon as they step into your home. The great thing is that it is a great way to bond with your pup and can be done quickly if you have the patience to do it.

House training a puppy begins by you letting them know what you expect of them. They will never be able to respect you and behave the way that you want them to until you let them know what you expect.

One of the first things that you need to do as soon as you get your puppy indoors is to let them know that they are not allowed to urinate or do anything else on the floor. This is one of the main reasons that you should take them outside before placing them in the house.

Take them to a part of the yard that you want them to do their business. They will then be able to understand that when they come to this part of the yard; they will be able to urinate or do any type of functions that they need to.

As a part of showing support, it is important that you should stand besides him until the end of his job. Try to observe him, and take note of the place he went for his waste dumping action, and carry him to the exact location when you notice him that he wants to do it again, because he will probably locate the same area the next time he does it independently.

If they do have an accident in your home you never want to punish them. You can easily clean up the mess and make sure that it does not happen again. Just remember to use some good cleaning supplies that can get the smell out of the house; this will ensure that they do not go to that same spot to use the bathroom again.

Never get careless and punish your new puppy to where they become scared of you. One of the most important things that you have to remember about house training a puppy is that it is going to take patience for both of you to learn your new habits. Give them time to learn their new habits and stay consistent with your training; eventually they will pick up their new habits.

Be sure to visit our site right now to find out how to begin house training a puppy. You will be amazed at how fast your new friend can learn these behaviors especially since all he wants to do is make you happy and get your approval. - 29953

Oral Health Care for Your Dog

By Jim Navary

Are you aware that your dog's oral hygiene can affect his overall health?

Periodontal disease is the most common oral problem that dogs face. Affecting the tissues that support and surround the teeth, periodontal disease is usually the result of excessive plaque buildup. As plaque accumulates on the teeth, it gradually hardens into tartar.

When plaque builds up it provides an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria. The bacteria results in inflammation of the gums causing them to swell and eventually bleed. As the dog's gums become more irritated additional bacteria are produced, causing the gums to recede and exposing the root. Eventually the teeth become loose in their sockets and, if left untreated, the teeth ultimately fall out.

The symptoms of periodontal disease include brown or yellow stains on the teeth, consistently bad breath, reddened gums and exposed tooth roots. In addition if your dog seems to have difficulty chewing, excessive drooling, a reluctance to eat or mouth pain (as evidenced by pawing at his mouth or rubbing his face on the ground) the problem may be periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is quite painful and may result in tooth loss. However, the condition can cause additional, even more serious, health problems. The accumulation of bacteria may result in bacteria entering the blood steam. Once in the blood it can migrate to the urinary tract, heart valves, and other systems of the body. This chain reaction, starting innocently enough as a result of inadequate oral hygiene can ultimately lead to life-threatening complications.

All breeds of dogs are at risk; however oral problems are more commonly found in dogs with short muzzles and flat faces. In addition, older dogs are also at increased risk. Dogs who are fed soft dog food are also more at risk than those who are fed primarily dry dog food.

Treatment of periodontal disease is dependent upon the degree to which the disease has progressed. Brushing your dog's teeth on a regular basis may resolve the problem. For more advanced cases the dog's teeth may require descaling - usually performed by the veterinarian with the dog under general anesthesia. When the disease has progressed to a very late stage, a specialist may be required to perform advanced dental surgery.

As always, prevention and early detection are critical. Routine brushing of your dog's teeth will help fight the buildup of plaque. In addition, regular visits to your veterinarian for a routine check-up can identify any hidden damage to the teeth before a problem grows more serious.

Help your dog maintain overall health by regularly visiting your veterinarian, feeding him a healthy diet, routine brushing of your dog's teeth, and giving him the occasional chew toy. He'll appreciate your efforts to keep him from getting "long in the tooth". - 29953

How to Check if a Horse is Healthy

By Doug Stewart

When deciding on a new horse, a key factor is its health. Although one cannot be 100% certain that a horse is absolutely healthy, there are some basic checks.

One begins with the general external appearance. The coat should be even, shinny and lie flat. The body should be well filled out, with well toned muscle. It should not be overweight or underweight. It should stand evenly on all four legs, with all four hooves pointing straight ahead. It is normal to rest a hind leg (but not a front leg), provided that it is not always the same leg which is rested.

The legs should be free from swellings, bumps or hot spots. Slowly run your hands over the entire length of the legs, with special attention to the lower parts. The outside of the hooves should be smooth, even and free of cracks.

The gums should be shinny, moist and pink. If one presses on the gums with a finger, they will turn white, but should return to pink within two seconds of removing your finger.

They should consist of firm balls, with a mild and inoffensive odor.

The horse should appear alert, interested in its surroundings and happy. The ears should be perked up and should move in response to sounds. It should appear relaxed rather than nervous.

Have the horse taken to an exercise ring and exercised at all gaits (e.g. walk, trot, and gallop). It should take easy, smooth strides of equal length and with the weight evenly spread on all four legs. It should not favor any leg. Circle the horse in both directions (left inside and right inside) to make sure that it performs equally well in both directions.

It should not sweat (except during hot weather) until it has been worked for some time at speed. Its respiration should gradually increase as the gait picks up but it should not breathe hard except at a fast gait. As the gait is reduced, its respiration should quickly reduce. Once the horse stops, its breathing and pulse should quickly return to resting normal. Neither during nor after exercise should the horse shown any sign of discomfort, pain or limping.

Ask the current owner about the horse's medical history. Ask if he will give you permission to talk with the horse's regular vet. Ask to see the medical records and inoculations book for the horse. In particular, ask if the horse has ever had colic, laminitis or any other illness. Be wary of any incomplete or evasive responses. Ask what the horse's normal diet is (horses fed a natural diet of grass, supplemented by hay, are less likely to have digestive problems than horses fed large on grains and feeds). Finally, ask the seller as to what written guarantee they provide in the event that a problem is found after sale, as this is an indication of the confidence they have in the horse's health. - 29953

Diabetes - Can This Illness Affect Your Dog?

By Barb Hicks

Dogs can in fact become afflicted with diabetes. In general, older dogs and certain breeds such as Poodles, Old English Sheepdogs, Golden Retrievers, Daschunds, Miniature Pinscher, Schnauzer and Beagles are the most affected.

Diabetes is marked by the non production of insulin, causing blood glucose levels to rise in the blood. Insulin must be given to lower high glucose levels. For dogs, insulin made especially for them can help your dog live a normal happy life.

Two forms of Diabetes:

Diabetes Insipidus: Is the lack of the anti-diuretic hormone called Vasopressin. Vasopressin controls how the kidneys absorb water.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM): Is insulin insufficiency. It is the most common and the most dangerous for dogs.

Diabetes is comprised of two types:

Type 1 - Is insulin dependent diabetes. The pancreas is not making insulin at all. Type 1 is seen mostly in younger dogs.

Type 2 - Is non insulin dependent diabetes. The pancreas is making insulin but the body is resistant to it. This type is mostly seen in older dogs.

Bigger dogs have a higher risk for diabetes than smaller dogs. It is also an autoimmune disease that dogs can inherit from their parents.

Symptoms:

You may notice that your dog is:

Eating more Drinking more Weighing less Diagnostic Testing:

If your precious pet is exhibiting signs of diabetes, it is imperative that you visit your local veterinarian. Once there, the vet will perform blood tests to check glucose levels as well as do a urinalysis to check kidney function and test for a urinary tract infection. If these tests come back with a positive diagnosis for diabetes, you will need to make changes to your dog's diet as well as implement daily exercise to aid in lessening symptoms and prevent future complications.

Treatment:

Fido will most likely be put on a diet that is high in fiber and protein. Fats and carbohydrates will be restricted. Depending on the severity of your dog's disease, you may need to feed him prepared meals instead of what is regularly eaten. Proper nutrition given the same time each day will help to keep glucose levels as normal as possible. Insulin is given after meals, and it is important not to limit your pet's fluid intake. Let him have his fill.

Exercise:

Giving your dog a regular daily exercise regimen performed at the same time daily assists in keeping glucose levels down as well as aiding in preventing glucose fluctuation. This is highly beneficial in keeping your dog's glucose consistently within the normal range.

Hormonal changes in your female dog put her at higher risk for diabetes. Consider having her spayed to prevent any undue complications of diabetes. - 29953

Dog Door Shopping for Man's Best Friend

By Craig Lewis

There are several reasons to consider the purchase of a dog (or cat) door. They give your pets the freedom to go outside as needed. A dog door is also a fire escape for your pets, if you aren't home during an emergency. Additionally they can provide a quick and safe return indoors, protecting your pet from coyotes and other outdoor dangers.

These doors come in as many sizes as do dogs. So not to worry, your pet isn't too big, or too small, for the convenience and safety offered by a dog door.

Having an idea of what kind of door you need for your pet will save you time. There are many varieties of pet doors on the market and going on line to search and get information on the different types of pet doors could help to narrow down the kind you are looking for.

Things to consider before you purchase a pet door would be how much you want to spend, and where you would want to install it. Are you going to hire someone to install it for you or will you be doing the work yourself? Dog doors are easy to install and can be inserted in most styles of windows or doors. Such as screens, french doors, sliding glass doors, insulated metal doors, garage doors, kennels, etc.

Dog doors can be installed into a large variety of different windows and doors such as French doors, sliding glass doors, garage doors and many others. Dog doors will range from $115 - $700+ and can be a do-it-yourself job unless you prefer to have it done professionally.

Again, dog doors are like dogs and come in all shapes and sizes so be sure you have accurate measurements of your pet including height and width. Doing so will assure that you get the correct size of dog door the first time.

As you search the various styles, you will find simple door flaps, to electronic, and automatic. The more sophisticated ones use sensors that are placed on the dog's tag and collar. Making it very convenient for your dog to travel freely from inside the house to outside the house.

When shopping for your pet door, be sure to choose a company that prides itself with quality products. You want a company that stands behind the product with customer service, offers a good warranty, has accessible replacement parts, and will spend some time showing you how to use the product with your pet. Your pet's safety should always be emphasized and the door should be built in such a way that it will be easily accepted by the dog. - 29953

Freedom For Your Best Friend: The Pet Door

By Ray Green

Having a dog is wonderful and satisfying, but it also means assuming a set of responsiblities. Sometimes, parents cede to their children's pressure and get them a pup, but when the pup grows and it's not cute anymore, the responsabilities of having it also increase.

Dogs not only need food, they also need water, sun, shade, a place where to relieve themselves, and that's not counting their emotional needs. You might have though about installing a pet door to help with some of your pet's needs, and if you haven't, then you should really consider it. We present here a small non-exhaustive list of things to ponder when thinking about whether or not to install a pet door.

Safety

In order to be totally safe, pet doors have to be correctly installed. Some people worry that by installing a pet door they are actually giving a burglar a way to break into their houses easily; thus a few precautions are in place. Big and large breeds will need a corresponding pet door, and if big enough, this door might let a human reach inside in an attempt to open the door from the inside.

What you need to check when you are thinking of the safety of installing a pet door is how far you can reach your arm inside the door when reaching through the door for the pet. If you can reach your doorknob, obviously the door is not safe. For most cases, the smaller animals work best for safe pet doors.

Convenience

Another factor to consider when thinking about installing one of these doors is how useable it will be for your pet. Is your pet large enough and strong enough to push the door open and be able to get out? In addition, how safe is the area that your pet will be exiting to? If the animal is exiting into, for example, a fenced in back yard, then a pet door makes more sense for your specific situation. - 29953

My Wife's Sister Put Her Dog Through Terrible Pet Pain

By Odessa Harpin

I don't think I've seen anything like it before. She wasn't very big at all. I believe she was a miniature shitsu. To use the word "miniature" was appropriate no matter what she was. She was an incredibly bad tempered little dog and always wanted to bite people who would get close to her or her owner. She had a nasty disposition and wasn't afraid to let you know it.

She died of poor nutrition not too long ago which is why I'm referring to her in the past tense.

Let me tell you something; the kind of food my in-laws were feeding that poor dog was an abomination even though these types of dogs are prone to having chronic tooth problems. Dogs are not equipped to handle the kinds of foods we eat. The pet pain it was in was obviously distressful even while it was still relatively young. I think her teeth were her biggest problem. Her irritation grew more and more over time because they never acknowledged her need for pet pain relief. They always fed her the same food that they were eating. They didn't seem to care about proper nutrition for her at all. I noticed over time when they would periodically bring the dog over to my house that her teeth slowly rotted away. My in-laws simply believed such a thing was common to these types of dogs and just ignored it. Even though they were actually causing the pet pain by denying her of a proper nutritious diet it never concerned them.

The dog went blind eventually and over time went into a state of canine paralysis. I feel that by exposing what my own in-laws did to their dog, even though it's a terrible thing to write about, I might be able to shame others when it comes to their dog's nutritional requirements into correcting their behavior. With all of the data and knowledge available to common people like my in-laws it seems to me that no dog should ever have to go through the kind pain that little shitsu went through simply because they were too lazy to do a little dog pain research. I found an excellent site called AvaFrick.com where anyone can go to find out immensely valuable information about the nutritional needs of their pets. My wife no longer associates with her sister and neither do I. Because of built in programming dogs are compelled to protect people they have imprinted on.

Don't you think we should do a better job protecting them? - 29953

Learning About Pet Doors

By Regina Gorman

If you have pets, you probably want to figure out something to help you give them the independence they probably want and deserve. After all, cats and dogs are not naturally domesticated animals and desire to have some sort of freedom. It can be hard to give your pet the freedom that he or she wants while keeping them safe, but pet doors are one way to do this.

What Are Pet Doors?

Pet doors are nothing but trap doors or flaps that are installed on doors and that your pet can push open to go outside without you opening the door for it. If you have some idea of carpentry, you can install your own pet door. If you decide to carry out the installation yourself, consider getting some tips and information from your local pet supply store or home depot. If you don't have much experience doing this type of job, then you're better off hiring a professional to do it for you.

Are Pet Doors Useful and Safe?

In a few cases, installing pet doors isn't such a good idea. The most obvious example of this is that they are very impractical for people who live in apartments. Another case that is not so common is when dog owners have backyards with no fences. Even for people with big areas, it's not a good idea to let you pet outside without restrain. It might even be illegal, depending on where you live. Even if it's not illegal, your dog's safety should be reason enough to avoid this sitution.

Being outside puts your dog in a lot of risks: cars can hit it and injure or kill it, people might take it with them, other animals can attack it, (or it can attack other pets, putting you in legal problems), and many more. You have to consider all of these before you install a pet door in your property.

Your pet could be hit by a car, picked up by someone who thinks he or she is a stray, or your pet could possibly harm someone and bring you into lengthy litigation as well that could possibly force your pet to be terminated. Before installing pet doors into your home, think about whether or not it is a good idea for you and your lifestyle. - 29953

Don't be an Animal and Manage Your Pet's Remaining Days with Proper Animal Pain Relief

By Ted Furguson

The kinds of things that we remember from our childhood can be really strange. Didn't know that did you? Whenever we children would use improper etiquette my dad would always ask "What are ya, an animal?". The debate still rages on about that. Are humans animals? According to The American Heritage Dictionary there is a distinction between people and animals and gametic isolation backs this up. But, for example, there are remarkable similarities between ape genetics and human genetics.

We actually share over thirty of the DNA in our bodies with bananas.

My whole point in all of this is to make the moral judgment call that we as humans have been given stewardship over our pets and we are duty bound to ensure their well being; especially with things like animal joint pain. She has pet water treadmill therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation as well. I know I had to look that last one up myself. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, it turns out, is something my wife has been using for years. Using electronic stimulation to manage and correct pain is what it all boils down to. Now it's available to your pets and it really works well. You are being robbed of valuable insight if you ignore what she has to offer you because this Ava Frick is a really amazing person. Were you aware, for example, that you can get your pet animal chiropractic services? I'm completely blown away by what's available for our pets today.

They can't tell us what's wrong with them with words. We need to rely on all the signals they give off as well as visiting the vet. We can also count on our own research by visiting a great site I discovered online called AvaFrick.com. This woman is doing the great work out there. I never even imagined the kinds of things I learned about animals.

You know one of the main things which separate us from the animals is our ability to utilize, explain, and comprehend reason and logic. We aren't driven merely by instinct alone but are moved by the acknowledgment of transcendental realities, logically speaking of course. - 29953

Dog Owners Guide : Stop Dog Chasing

By Mark Walters

Chasing, whether it be cats, cars or even people, is something most dogs love to do. Unfortunately though, despite dogs that chase generally not actually hurting whatever it is that they chase, they still can cause themselves or others some harm in the process.

Allowing your dog to chase anything is an irresponsible thing to do. Behavioral problems like chasing are more than just annoying. Solving this problem is possible though, but it will take some effort to correct.

Different breeds of dogs have a stronger instinct in chasing than other dogs but, whichever you breed you have, the behavior can't be stopped by simply yelling at or hitting your dog.

The very least that you should is not let your dog be in a situation that allows it to chase in the first place. Keep him on a leash or in a fenced yard if necessary. Until you have learnt to predict your dogs behavior and have trained it obey your commands, this must be done to ensure no danger comes to your dog or those who share an environment with it.

To prevent them from chasing an owner needs to understand his dogs cues. It is common for dogs to give some indication, such as a prolonged stare or a lifted leg, before they set off after something. Once you know what it is that your dog does, you can act before it does. You should be able to find this out fairly quickly as dogs are creatures of habit.

To stop a dog from chasing, it needs to learn to obey your commands. At the very least, your dog needs to respond to two - sit down and come here. It will be much easier to stop your dog from chasing once he understands and responds to these.

So, lets now look at how to train a dog to do what you tell it to do. First obtain the toy or treat that it likes the best. Place it about 10 ft. from the dog, and then allow it to go towards it. As it starts to move, command it to either sit down or come to you. After it has done what you want, say okay and let it have the toy or treat.

Get a friend to help you, once it has mastered this part of his training. Your dog should be standing or sitting by you, then your friend should past waving a toy or treat in their hand. If it starts to chase then give the dog the command to either sit down or come. On obeying your command, give it the reward. Should it ignore you and continue to chase then be sure not to give it a reward, even if you feel sorry for it.

Patience is necessary, but, with a little persistence, this approach always works. Remain positive and determined and you should have the problem solved within a week. - 29953

T-Shirts For Dogs

By Joanne Gallagher

There are so many ways to help your dog know you love them and treat them like the royalty they are. One way is cute tee shirts, or attitude tee shirts and tank tops.

If your dog could talk, what would they say? Would they say they were an honor student? A tough guy? Or how about a princess or prince? With attitude tee shirts you can help them express the things they've been wanting to all along.

These cute shirts can include both sleeves and a simple tank top. If your dog is athletic and loves to run and jump in the great outdoors, you might find it better to buy a tank top for them. These are great because they are still stylish, but able to play without getting too hot.

Does your dog think they are royalty? Treat them that way with rhinestones on their back. They can say anything from princess to king.

Dogs love to be outside and get exercise. Loves to Run Dog Tanks are made of breathable mesh with ribbed, knit trim to keep dogs cool during a vigorous run. Great active wear for sporty dogs. Machine-washable cotton is great for jogging or walking so it is fresh for each new run!

Some owners complain that their dog won't keep cute tee shirts or tank tops like these on. Usually the problem is that they haven't been measured correctly. Measurements of your pets neck and chest have to be accurate to insure that your dog will find these tee shirts comfortable.

When measuring, make sure you measure from your dogs collar to their tailbone. When they ask for the measurement of the chest, this is simply the circumference of your dogs chest.

Correctly measure your Dog for Dog T-Shirts so they have a comfortable fit and enjoy wearing fun dog clothes. Simply measure from the collar of your pets neck to its tailbone, and then measure the circumference around the largest part of your pets chest. Dog apparel comes in a size to fit almost every dog. Dog Shirts range from Teacup to XL. Consult the manufacturers sizing chart because the cut of the dog tee varies with each manufacturer of dog apparel. - 29953
