What's The Best Way To Train A Dog? Some Must-Know Tips

By Sandy Kleiman

Using a dog obedience training program should be something that all dog owners look into. Not only do you want your dog to behave in a certain way (and be a "good boy"!), but you will also naturally strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

It's important that you remember that with any dog training program you want to approach it as though you are a teacher to your dog. You don't want to be a ruthless enforcer just as much as you don't want to let your dog think that he or she is in charge! Remember - you are teaching your pooch how to behave and become a well-behaved dog that will make any dog owner jealous.

Who's the best person to train your dog? You of course! It's a great way to strengthen your bond and make your pup the best behaved dog on the block.

Obviously you don't want to just go in the backyard and start yelling commands. To properly train your dog you need to have a game-plan in mind. For that reason we included a link at the bottom of this article that will take you to a couple of proven dog training programs you can use at home. In the meantime, let's go over a couple of general tips you should keep in mind when training your pooch.

The first thing to always keep in mind is that you want your dog to be in the right frame of mind before you start any "training session". Make sure they have gone to the washroom so they aren't distracted. You also shouldn't start training right after they have ate - it's easy to get sleepy after eating.

Why do this? So that your dog isn't distracted during your training. You want him or her to be completely comfortable.

Another tip is to have a little play time before you jump into training. This makes your dog relaxed and more receptive towards you.

Make sure that you have some treats ready for your pooch so you can reward him - just like humans dogs will continue to behave a certain way when there is something in it for them! Of course you don't want to give away too many of these as this can confuse him. Reward your dog only when appropriate.

If your dog runs off during a training session, don't chase after it. Simply use an authoritative voice and call him back; then reissue the command you are working on when your dog returns.

There are going to be times where it just looks like your pooch is absolutely clueless about what you are expecting of them. This is normal and you can't let yourself get annoyed or mad at them. Instead, find ways to better communicate with your dog so you get the most out of your future training sessions.

You may have to help him out and physically show him what you want him to do. There are times that it might be frustrating, but this will get a whole lot easier over time. It will pay off in the long run!

If you have decided to train your dog on your own, pat yourself on the back! It's an incredibly rewarding experience that will pay huge benefits in the long run. You (and your dog) will be happy you decided to do it on your own. Good luck! - 29953

Learning About Electric Dog Fences

By Jordan Murphay Monroser

When you first decided to get a puppy, you probably weren't aware of all the responsibilities that went along with being a dog owner. There are a lot of things that need to be done on a daily basis to take care of a dog and on top of all of that they can be very expensive.

One of the most frustrating things about being a dog owner is not being able to communicate with your pet. You can't understand them and they can't understand you. This can make training your dog to understand the boundaries of you property very hard.

Because of the fact that communicating with your dog is almost impossible and training them to stay within the perimeter of your yard can be just as hard, most pet owners keep their dogs leased in the backyard. This can almost completely defeat the purpose of letting them outside in the first place. Leases can make it very hard for your dog to do doggy things like running and playing.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could just explain to your dog that they can't leave the boundary of your property. They would be able to run around and have fun outside. You could let them loose and never have to worry about them running off and getting into trouble.

If you are interested in being able to let your dog be truly free on your property you should consider wireless dog fences. These fences are completely invisible and will not blemish your backyard, all while teaching your dog not to run off. You can leave your dog alone, unleashed and not have to worry.

There are two different parts that go to the wireless dog fence. The transmitter sends the signal and the dog collar receives it. Whenever your pet begins to stray past the transmitters set boundaries, they will hear a warning sound. If your dog continues on that path they will get a corrective shock. There is no need to worry as this shock is mearly a warning and is not painful for the animal.

The amazing thing about wireless dog fences is that they show you just how smart your pet really is. You will be amazed how quickly your dog learns their boundaries and within as short a period as a few days will rarely even roam any where near them.

Wireless dog fences are very easily set up. Simply, choose a place in your home where you'd like to place the transmitter, set it to the distance you'd like your pet to be able to roam and that's it. Your dog will be able to roam free outside with little to no supervision. - 29953

Keeping Your Dog at Home: The Dog Fence

By Jenny Boles

Most animals have the instinct to chase after things when they see them and this can lead to injury, death, and in today's world, lawsuits. A dog owner must keep their dog on their own property and secured if they want to avoid any of this and a pet fence might be the best way to do this.

How to Select The Right Dog Fence

Two of the factors that you have to take into consideration when purchasing a dog fence are the area that you will assign to your dog and your dog's size. Small dogs that can't climb or jump high can be safely kept within a small dog fence.

Large breeds require a dog fence that is tall and strong, since they might want to break through it, rather than jump over it. Thus, stronger dog fences will require a more expensive material. However, there are places that sell affordable pet fences that are still very reliable.

In addition to keep your dog inside, dog fences keep other animals out, such as other dogs. In addition, they protect your garden or vegetables from being eaten by rabbits, gophers, and other furry visitors. A dog fence is also a good way of showing your dog which area belongs to it, and which one belongs to another family pet.

In addition, if you have more than one pet, a dog fence will let you assign different areas for each one.Purchasing a dog fence depends on the area that you want your dog to roam as well as the size of your dog. If you have a small dog that can't climb or jump over a tall height then you can look into a small dog fence to keep him at bay.

Sometimes an animal can feel territorial and if another animal came into that area it could lead to the animals fighting one another. A fence for any pet would be a good idea if you wanted to keep them from wandering off or from attacking people who are coming to visit you. The fence can also double and be a small deterrent for burglars or vandals. - 29953

Different Breed-Different Dog

By Tom Clark

Fortunately, not all canines are created equal. The differences in every individuals vary from one another and the same goes with the variation among the disposition and personality of each dog breeds. The key to be successful with your efforts to bring home a dog is knowing which breed of dog can be suitable to you or your home. There are a great deal of different dog types that are known to the world, not to mention those produced as cross-types like in the form of Labradoodle which is a fusion of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle.

Is your home suitable enough for a large dog? Obviously, knowing the size of dog that your household can handle is one thing that you should be able to think about. A house with a large yard out in the suburbs can offer enough room for a large dog to run and play. You might want your kids to have a pet that could be their cuddly playmate but is also sturdy enough. Is a guard dog that can be alert enough to watch over your home or business the kind of dog that you hope to have? Are you the competitive type of individual that you even want to train a dog that you can compete with others as a show dog? Or do you just want a loyal companion, small enough to be comfortable in an apartment and calm enough to sit with his head on your lap in the evening? In searching for the kind of dog breed that may be right for you, these things are in reality practical enough to be considered.

How many people live in your home? A single individual who works long hours needs to select a dog breed that can manage with lots of alone time indoors - perhaps a dog that enjoys toys and entertains himself. A medium to large-size dog is what a household with small children might need since most of them are gentle and patient with youngsters by nature. For small children, a dog is like a toy - the fact that a dog is one of the living things that they might get hurt with their rough kind of play is not something that they are truly mindful about.

The behaviors of small youngsters is not something that some dog types can handle and would endure with but being with mature children can be a good choice for them. Dog breeds which would not demand so much attention or maintenance and can be as calm as the keeper are dogs than can go well with older adults.

Dogs can also be divided into two fundamental classes - dogs that tend to shed and those dogs that don't really lose hair. One of those issues that most dog owners complain about is the shedding of their dogs. May it be to your clothing, furniture or even to your guests who would tend to sit in any part of your house, dog hair is more likely to be found clinging on. Short haired dogs may look simpler but they can lose hair, too. You can divide shedding with the barely shedding, seasonal only dropping hair and constant shedding hair.

Both the height and weight matter are fundamental things that you should think about when choosing the size of the breed. Smaller dogs weigh under 10 pounds, medium dogs weigh 11-25 pounds, large dogs weigh 26-50 pounds and extra large dogs weigh 51-80 pounds. There are extremely large dogs which can weigh up to one hundred to one hundred and eighty pounds such as the Mastiffs and St. Bernards.

Is your furniture tough enough to stand anything that a dog can do? When you are trying to make a decision with respect to the perfect choice of the dog breed, expand your view of the dog in terms of its potential size and not only as you see him as a pup. You shouldn't be shocked to see that your big dogs would consume a lot more food than you do. If you bring home a Mastiff, you may need another job just to pay for the dog food and care.

Care demands are another fundamental consideration. Some dog breeds require more grooming and care than others. Dogs that have fancy coats, like poodles or show dogs may spend more time in the spa than you do. A weekly or even daily grooming should not be deprived to ordinary family dogs since they might need it to untangle their coats and to keep themselves in a good physical health. Take time to study the dog breed, size, temperament and grooming demands before you make a choice. It is only you who can provide the basic needs as well as the kind and quantity of love and attention that the dog of your choice may need, so you better be mindful of the things that you should know and give to live prosperously with your dog. - 29953

Proper Fish Tank Water Treatment For Healthy Fish

By Dustin Williams

If you want to have healthy fish, you need to have the right type of water in your fish tank. Many people who are just beginning to set up a fish tank don't understand how important it is to test your water and treat it for any imbalances. You need to have the right water for your fish.

Different fish have different requirements when it comes to the condition of the water that they will do best in. It is always a good idea to test your water for the pH, gH, and kH levels and try to get fish that thrive in water similar to the water that you already have. This will mean less work for you when it comes to fish tank water treatment.

Tap water tends to be the best type of water for your freshwater fish tanks, but it does need some treatment before it can be used. Chlorine is not good for fish, so you need to remove the chlorine from the water before adding it to your tank. You can use a conditioner as a way to try to correct any imbalances in your water and add beneficial substances. This type of fish tank water treatment is common. It will get rid of the chlorine. You can also leave tap water sitting out for 24 hours to get rid of chlorine, though this will not correct any other imbalances.

If the pH of your water is not at the right level, or is not remaining stable, you might need to do a fish tank water treatment in order to correct this. Sometimes this can be as simple as mixing a small amount of spring water in with the tank water. Other times you will need to treat whatever is causing the pH fluctuation.

You also need to make sure that the kH, or concentration of carbonates and bicarbonates, in your water is at the proper level. These help to buffer the water so that the pH stays more constant, otherwise as time goes on it will get acidic. There are a number of different options you can use for fish tank water treatment if you have high or low kH levels, including various chemicals you can purchase at the store.

You gH is the general hardness of your water. Some fish prefer harder water and some prefer softer water. You can use peat moss to soften the water, or add rocks to help harden the water. The simplest thing to do is get fish that suit the water that you already have so you don't need to do too much treatment of your water. - 29953

Understanding Why Dogs Fight With Each Other

By Kurt Reynolds

When two canines in the same household have a dispute, owners are often quick to break them apart. The motivation to do so is instinctive. After all, fighting suggests injury and no owner wants to see their dogs hurt. Unfortunately, breaking them apart can cause more problems and inhibit their ability to completely resolve issues within the "pack."

Below, we'll explain a few of the most common reasons dogs fight amongst themselves. Once you understand the motivations behind their disputes, you'll be better able to control the environment in a manner that doesn't completely disrupt their interaction.

A Struggle For Status

Canines are pack animals and like all pack animals, there is a social structure within their group (even if that "group" only numbers two). The pooch at the top of that structure has the highest status until someone lower in the hierarchy challenges him. When challenged, the dominant canine will either concede his status or accept the challenge by fighting. This struggle for status within the hierarchy is common, especially if multiple dogs live under one roof and enjoy near equal positions within the "pack's" internal structure.

Fighting is often triggered when a new pooch is introduced to the group. Even if he does not issue a challenge for authority and dominance, he may initially be seen as a threat. Another circumstance that can lead to a dispute is when a canine is brought back into the group after having spent a long period of time elsewhere. Positioning to regain status - or protect it - ensues.

When The Owner Shows Favoritism

Owners unwittingly exacerbate internal disputes when they intervene in the fighting. The reason is because that intervention is often perceived as favoritism to a lower-status canine. If a dispute takes place and the owner protects the dog with the lower rank from the higher ranked pooch, the intervention can imply an artificial social status. In doing so, it can impact the existing hierarchy leading to even more fighting when the owner is present.

Steps To Eliminate The Fighting

If you own dogs that fight with each other, it's important that you carefully identify the dominant pooch. The reason is because you need to reinforce the existing social structure. Because access to food, water, and other resources is an important barometer of status with the pack hierarchy, give the dominant pooch first access. That will reduce challenges to authority. To accurately identify dominance, consider their age, dispositions, health, and interaction with each other.

If a dispute happens over access to food, toys, or other items, remove the lower status canine from the environment and give the higher ranked dog access. That sends a clear message that the existing hierarchy has your approval.

Canines fight in order to protect or establish their status within their group. Give them room to resolve matters quickly. If they cannot resolve them, support the existing structure. - 29953
