The Magnetic Pet Door: Not Only For Dogs

By Ralph Gunn

Most people think that a magnetic cat door works only on batteries or electrical current, but most don't, which means that they are unaffected by power failures or blackouts. This feature is very convenient, as the door won't let the cat be locked out during bad weather because the storm knocked out the electrical system of the neighborhood.

How Magnetic Doors Operate

The magnetic pet door responds to a small magnet that is attached to a collar worn around the cat's neck or to keys worn on the cat's collar. When the pet comes close to the door the magnetic pull releases the latch and the door opens. The cat is then free to go and come at their convenience.

The main purpose of the magnetic cat door is to let the cat into or out the house without the help of the owner, who can even go out on vacation without worrying about the cat.

Safety

One of the safety features of the magnetic cat door is that it only opens for your cat and for nothing else, locking itself after the cat is inside the house. This means that if your cat is chased by another animal, like a ferocious dog, the door will keep other animals from following your cat inside the house. As a nice addition, thieves can't use the door to get into your house either.

Some magnetic cat doors even have some extra features that will allow you to modify how and when access is granted. Despite what some people think, these doors are very easy to install.

A magnetic pet door is resistant to water, which means that you won't have to worry about rain or winter affecting it, and it won't let water come into your house either. While a magnetic cat door is very convenient, it's not recommended for very young kittens.

Cost

Generally cost around $50. However, some models cost up to $100. Luxurious or custom made models can cost even more. - 29953
