Vitamins And Foods Important For Canine Consumption

By Chris Channing

Even though you could drive to the supermarket right now and get a 20-pound back of dog food, don't put any faith into the fact that it is healthy for your pet. There are some pet foods sold over the general market that are lacking in comparison to better types of dog foods that keep dogs healthy as can be.

Protein is of the several ingredients that should not be skipped out on. Protein is necessary for healthy growth and maintenance of the canine body, but we wary of "cheap" proteins that come from poor quality sources. Good protein comes from meat that is on par with the type of meat you would buy for your family. After all, the dog should be considered to be one of the family.

Fish isn't something that dogs eat a lot of; it's something that is more associated with cats. Fish has the essential fatty amino acids that is important for show dogs that need a fine coat and healthy exterior. It also stimulates the healing process. Herring and trout are common sources of fish in dog food products.

A dog that is looking tired may not be getting its fair share of grain products. Grains have carbohydrates in them, which are great for long term energy. This can come from corn or wheat, but more expensive dog foods use wheat since it is easily digested and has extreme health benefits. Corn is reserved for cheaper brands that are still edible, but perhaps not as healthy or tasty for the pet.

Mixtures that contain a considerable amount of rice are also good for canines. Rice is especially important for dogs that are feeling sick or do not have a healthy digestion tract. The rice is easily sent through the canine's system, and is full of fiber so that the food is easily passed by the canine. If your canine is truly having problems, sometimes feeding the canine straight rice is a good way to settle the stomach.

If you are given the choice of eating a fresh fruit or one that has been canned in manufactured circumstances, odds are you will go for fresh fruit. The idea is the same for pets, although not just for taste. Organic foods that are put into dog food are much more healthy than the synthetic ingredients that are put into dog food. Factory made food isn't always bad, but the majority of dog food is sold so cheap for a reason.

Final Thoughts

When you first get your pet, it isn't uncommon to go through several different types of dog food brands. You should find something that your dog likes, your budget can afford, and one that has all of the previously mentioned ingredients. Don't take shortcuts, or your dog's health may suffer. - 29953
