Pet Memorial: Showing Respects to a Beloved Pet

By Chad Brooks

The way you choose to memorialize your lost pet will be a reflection of the special times the two of you shared together. You may choose to remember your beloved pet by helping other animals find loving homes. Perhaps you prefer to create a living memorial in remembrance of your pet and his or her unique characteristics. Here are a few suggestions of how to memorialize your lost pet.

One practical idea is to donate money to a local animal shelter in honor of your pet. It's an excellent way to memorialize your dog or cat while offering help to others in need of a good home. This particular way of memorializing your pet is especially meaningful if you adopted your dog or cat from an animal shelter. Donating food, pet equipment, or even your time to an animal shelter are also ways to pay tribute to a longtime, loyal pet.

A creative way to memorialize your lost pet is to write a poem. Consider all of the times that he or she was there to keep you company or just give you a laugh. Once you've written the poem, have it engraved on a decorative stone and find a place for it in your garden. If you'd like to enjoy the poem inside your house, copy it in onto a sheet of fancy parchment paper and frame it. For an additional personal touch, you might include a photo or sketch of your pet next to the poem.

The third idea for memorializing your lost pet is to plant a tree in his or her honor. Perhaps your pet liked to exercise in a particular park or nearby woods. You'll need to check with the property owners, but a tree serves as a living remembrance of your pet that others are able to see and appreciate. If your pet preferred to stay within the confines of your yard, you may want to plant a tree or some flowers in a particular spot there.

Perhaps you have in mind a more private way to memorialize your lost pet. After all, you and your pet shared plenty of days together that were special for just the two of you. A photo album is both an imaginative and personal item that will help you to remember the fun times with your pet. The photo album, or scrap book, could be separated into the various seasons of your pet's life. For instance, if you had a dog you could include photos of him or her as a puppy then as an adult dog. Opening up a memorial photo album is one of the most comforting ways to remember treasured times spent with your pet. - 29953
