Metal Hardware - An Essential Component Of Your Nylon Webbing Projects

By Jim Witt

When shopping for a custom-made designer dog collar be sure you get the chance to decide what type of hardware that will be used on the collar. There are a couple of hardware choices: metal or plastic. While each type of hardware presents its own set of qualities, this article will lay out the benefits of metal hardware only.

Strength and durability is one apparent advantage of any webbing project. The vast majority of metal hardware used in dog collars, leashes, climbing harnesses and other webbing projects contain a nickel-plating and have special welding to withstand rust. However, metal hardware can also be purchased in brass and other finishes. In addition to finishes, metal hardware comes in various sizes which match the same size widths of webbing. This is the case for nylon as well as polypro webbing.

The projects that benefit from the many types of metal hardware vary from climbing harnesses to boating rigging, from animal harnesses to backpacks, from purses to luggage and from dog collars to key rings. Clothing has also been designed using types of metal hardware. For example, belts are a common accessory and one professional wrestler has a costume made of leather strips and hundreds of dee rings. Designs using metal hardware are too numerous to mention.

When making a dog collar, side release buckle, triglides and dee rings are the most frequently used. The metal side release buckles, because of the strength of metal, are usually used on bigger collars for the larger breeds of dogs, or for those dogs that can break a plastic side release buckle. A side release buckle is important for the safety of a dog. Even though it can be opened with one hand, it has a smaller chance of opening on accident.

Triglides are used on collars or any project that needs allowances for modification to the length and is strong enough to hold heavy weight safely. To attach a leash, the Dee rings are used on collars as a strong ring. Metal hardware also includes rings of different shapes to be used in other types of webbing projects. These include o-rings, triangle-shaped rings and rectangle-shaped rings. The welded type are the strongest of these, but there are also non-welded rings. Another type of metal ring is the split ring, which is used most often as key holders.

A snap hooks is also a type of metal hardware that is frequently used. They are an excellent solution for a project that needs a connection to be strong, safe and easy to detach. Snap hooks are swivel snap hooks so they are useful in preventing webbing from twisting. Climbing harnesses and animal leashes are two types of items that usually contain snap hooks. A couple of other types of snap hooks are the trigger snap hooks and the barrel snap hook. Other types of snap hooks are available and function well with other webbing projects.

Another type of swivel hook is the lanyard hook. This type of swivel hook attaches to a webbing or cord to perform many uses from holding identification cards around a person's neck to holding keys. Lanyards are also used to fire cannons from a safe distance. Key fob hardware is used to clamp on the end of webbing to form an attachment to any equipment, but is usually used in making key chains.

The types of hardware and projects that can be made are too numerous to mention. Any project that depends on strength and safety would greatly benefit from using plated, welded metal hardware. - 29953
