Understanding the Types of Fish Food Available

By Leonard Boyler

Once you have purchased your fish, you need to supply them with the proper food that will keep them healthy and happy. It doesn't always have to be a big bag of fish flakes. Your fish also need good nourishment that will give them an active life, enhance their growth and stimulate breeding. Their diet should also give them a more efficient immune system against sickness.

One type of food you can give your fish is the dry fish food variety. Fish flakes, granules, wafers and pellets are just some of the dry fish foods you can buy in aquarium supply stores. They are usually fortified with vitamins and minerals and are made from either plant, fish or animal products. Some are especially formulated to enhance the colors of the fish. They are preferred by most fishkeepers because they are easy to store and to feed to the fish. Although, many agree that it is not the best food available to most fish.

Larger fish, those bigger than an inch, require a more specialized diet. The carnivores or omnivores will prefer meat in their diet. One very popular meat food is bloodworms. Bloodworms are red mosquito larvae that can be purchased frozen from aquarium supply stores. They are considered the more nutritious alternative to flakes and pellets. They look like small ice cubes when packaged and you just drop these cubes in the aquarium water when it's feeding time.

There are other fresh or frozen foods available as fish food. Brine shrimp or krill, which can be purchased live or frozen, are known for bringing out the colors in tropical fish. The Daphnia, or water flea, is a small crustacean that can be purchased at aquarium supply stores. Although most fish enjoy them, they do not provide much nutritional value.

Earthworms are especially enjoyable to larger fish. They are rich in protein but not much else. It will be a mistake to feed your fish with just earthworms or with just the Daphnia. Both are lacking in most essential nutrients for your fish. The large predatory fish also will enjoy small feeder fish. They enjoy the taste and the chase.

There should be a rotation of some or all of these foods in feeding your fish not just to give them balanced nutrition but also to provide variety in their diet. They are likely to get tired of the same food day after day just like any person. You also have the option of supplementing the dried pellets or flakes diet with live or frozen food.

If your fish are herbivores rather than carnivores, your fish will probably be happiest nibbling throughout the day rather than eating at specific times. Planted tanks provide food opportunities; herbivore fish will also eat the algae growing in your aquarium.

The aquarium supply store variety food can also be supplemented with little bits of vegetables that you can prepare yourself. Blanched spinach leaves, slices of cucumber and zucchini, red lettuce leaves and boiled peas can make some herbivores very happy indeed. You can let them float in the water for an hour or two and then remove them to unclutter your aquarium. Some dried algae wafers will also be welcome to herbivores.

With just a little research you will know the kind of food that will give your fish the best nutrition and variety in their diet. Be sure to make the necessary adjustments in their diet as they grow older to prevent them from getting sick so they will live a long and happy life in your aquarium. - 29953
