Stay Away From Training Your Dog This Way

By Ira Nelson

Nearly every dog owner wants to teach their dog properly. However, nearly an equal number seriously underestimate the amount of time and discipline it takes to instruct a dog. This results in a familiar set of mistakes that are often made that could, with more or less effort, be completely avoided.

Dogs are definitely not furry children as some owners consider them to be. An average dog is going to have the mental capacity of a human 2-year-old, but there are not as many similarities as differences between a human and the dog. Dogs cannot follow language processing or reasoning like human beings. In the same manner, they do not understand cause and effect.

This can start being quite frustrating as the same command is repeated over and over, and the dog seems to ignore the commands. Most of the time it is not rejecting the command; it is likely that they don't understand it. It seems it should be straightforward because they've displayed the correct behavior many times before, but today they are being headstrong.

Some dogs probably would be called headstrong if they were human. However, they can be thrown off easily or be unable to put together the command of "come" today with yesterday's behavior and subsequent reward. There are some probable explanations for this behavior.

Patience is the one character trait that dog owners need to have. You must be ready to repeat those same commands over and over again, knowing that there will be times when you won't get the conclusions you expect and want. There are many dogs that may take up to two years to learn commands past the most simple to the degree that it really sticks.

It is of no use if you lose your temper with your dog and punish it physically. Many people think that physical punishment is the easiest way to correct your disobedient dog's bad behavior. This is definitely not a way to inspire trust in your animal. Physical punishment has to be kept in reserve for the most unforgivable behavior.

Dogs, like humans, are more ready to follow people whom they like and trust instead of people whom they fear. It is only when they have no choice that they follow a person whom they fear. A dog is going to endure its punishment without understanding the reason behind it. And that is just one important reason why physical punishment should not be used for training dogs.

Here's how NOT to Teach your dog: - Fail to remember that your dog has a nature different from yours and speak to them like they were human. - Believe that a dog can connect events across time and situations and draw the same conclusion as you. - Get angry and intolerant when they don't behave as you expect them to. Smack them for not behaving the way you want.

These methods are completely useless and are going to result in a frustrated dog owner and an unstable and fearful pet. So, to make sure that you do not get these results, change YOUR behavior before you try changing your dog's behavior. - 29953
