What To Be Aware Of When Setting Up A Chinchilla Cage

By Dirk Hoshaw

If you are thinking about getting a chinchilla, then you will need to know how to set up a chinchilla cage. You want to try to duplicate his environment as much as possible to keep your chinchilla comfortable and happy. Chinchillas in the wild live in a high altitude, and their normal environment is usually cool and dry. In captivity, chinchillas do best when they are kept in an environment that is around 55 to 70 degrees.

Heat strokes are quite easy for these animals to have if they are not kept in temperatures lower than around 82 degrees. They should also be kept in low humidity, so their cage should be in a room with good ventilation and no dampness. You should consider putting their cage in a place with plenty of light but no direct sunlight.

You may want to have your chinchilla in a room close to you where you can see more of it, but in an active home it could be best for the chinchilla to be in a separate room. A chinchilla can become stressed due to the activity and this will make them quite unhappy. If there is not a room to move them to, you could always try simply covering the cage with a light sheet.

The bigger the cage you buy for your chinchilla the better. Chinchillas are very active pets and they love to climb, they will want lots of room to climb and run. Condo cages are good cages to buy your chinchilla because they have multiple stories to climb and run on.

A wire mesh cage is the best type of cage for chinchillas. Aquariums and plastic containers are a bad idea because there is very little ventilation. A wooden cage is also a bad idea, because over time your chinchilla will chew his way out. Wooden houses are great though. A chinchilla needs a small dark place to sleep in order to feel at ease. PVC pipe is also great for them to sleep in.

Keep your chinchilla cage clean if you want to avoid a stinking cage. Chinchillas do not have very much odor when they have clean cages. The size of the chinchilla cage and if there are multiple chinchillas will determine how often you need to clean the cage.

These animals are quite active and because of this they need toys to stay busy. A wheel is a great way to help them run off some energy and give them something to do. Chew toys are a must if you want to keep your chinchillas teeth straight and short. Chinchillas are great pets as long as you have the time to look after them properly. - 29953
